CPiO Customer notice: increased risk of phishing scams

We are seeing an increase in phishing scams that the press are referring to as “Whaling”  – please see http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-34570713

The technique involves sending an email that appears to have originated from a Director in the company; usually the email will be from the Managing Director to the Head of Finance. The address will look genuine, the email typically applies a sense of urgency and it will usually be followed by bank details to make a transfer. I ask you to make others aware within your organisation as this threat is real  – all individuals should be wary of these types of requests even if they appear to come directly from a senior figure in the organisation.

In order to offer some additional safeguard we strongly suggest the application of a message that can be applied to the footer of an email to identify that it originates from an external source, even if spoofed as coming from an internal email address.

For those customers who utilise Websense Email Cloud Security, CPiO can explicitly block spoofed emails if requested to do so. However, it should be noted that this will impact upon any inbound email from web forms on websites etc.

If you would like to discuss this issue further or would like to request some support in the application of further safeguards please contact your account manager on 0344 880 6140 or email info@cpio.co.uk
