Upcoming HMRC changes which will affect Sage 50, Sage 50 Payroll and Sage 200 Professional

Written by Tamara Campbell | Mar 7, 2024 10:14:37 AM

Due to recently announced HMRC changes, CBC Ciphers will no longer be supported from May 2024, affecting submissions to Sage 50 Accounts, Sage 50 Payroll and Sage 200 Professional.

What does this mean?

Any previous Microsoft Operating Systems including Windows 7, Windows 8, Server 2008, Server 2012 or 2012 R2, that were used with any of the server types listed below, will no longer be supported:

  • VAT submission (in product) - Sage 50 Accounts
  • CIS submission - Sage 50 Accounts
  • EC Sales submission - Sage 50 Accounts
  • RTI submission - Sage 50 Payroll

Next steps

Impacted customers will need to complete one or more of the following options:

Sage MTD for VAT Submission module

The changes that are being introduced in May 2024 will not affect any submissions made via the Sage MTD for VAT Submission module, as long as the current Cipher suite is installed on the computer that is used for the submission.

In-product VAT Submissions

Due to recent HRMC changes that were implemented in November 2023, in-product VAT submissions from Sage 50 v28.0 or below, and Sage 200 Spring 2018 up to and including 2021 R1, will no longer be accepted as the embedded browser is Internet Explorer.

*Ciphers are an element of a handshake chain that is used to encrypt data in transit. In this instance, Ciphers are used between Sage’s client application, via an embedded browser, to HMRC services. The operating system has appointed Cipher suites that it supports, the client application can also identify its own Cipher preference and the service your connected to, also has supported Ciphers. When the handshake is initiated, the connected Client Application, Operating System and Service need to correspond on a supported Cipher for the connection to work.

If any CPiO customers are affected by the discontinuation of CBC ciphers, please contact our Support Team.
