Tuesday October 10th marks World Mental Health Day 2023

Tuesday October 10th marks World Mental Health Day 2023

Research by UK charity, The Mental Health Foundation has found approximately 1 in 6 people in the UK experience a mental health problem such as depression or anxiety in any given week.

World Mental Health Day, observed annually on October 10th, helps raise awareness of mental health issues and how we can all play a part in driving positive change for mental well-being.

One crucial aspect of this day is the emphasis on fostering open conversations about mental health in the workplace.

On World Mental Health Day, our CPiO colleagues will be encouraged to talk about mental health, how to look after it, and the importance of seeking help at a time of need.

Danielle Piotet, HR Officer at CPiO says, “Poor mental health can significantly impact employee well-being and productivity. It is essential to create an environment where colleagues feel comfortable discussing their mental health concerns.

World Mental Health Day serves as a vital reminder of the significance of addressing mental health in the workplace. I’m a firm believer that encouraging conversations among colleagues about their mental well-being can lead to early intervention and support.”

Sadly, the stigma around mental health remains a challenge in the UK workplace. According to a report by Business in the Community, 84% of employees have experienced poor mental health, but nearly half (49%) felt unable to talk to their employers about it. This highlights the importance of creating a supportive, stigma-free environment in the workplace to encourage open conversations about mental health.

By sharing effective strategies to enhance mental health, workplaces can contribute to a happier, healthier, and more productive workforce. The Mental Health Foundation has published an insightful article, sharing its best mental health tips - backed by research.

In a world where mental health affects a significant portion of the population, the importance of initiatives like World Mental Health Day cannot be overstated. Open conversations about mental health, especially in the workplace, where employees spend a substantial portion of their lives, should be encouraged.

CPiO prides itself on the support channels available to employees, including private medical care and mental health first aiders in the workplace. World Mental Health Day presents the perfect opportunity to remind colleagues of these invaluable services.
