Selecting the right financial management software for your non-profit

Selecting the right financial management software for your non-profit

Making the decision to move to a new software system can be daunting. But it doesn’t have to be.

Words you’ll no doubt have read time and time again. But why is it so daunting?

Many NPO’s put off upgrading or migrating to new technology due to the overwhelming number of competing products and sometimes the fear of choosing the wrong solution. And taking time to carefully evaluate each product simply seems unfeasible.

Furthermore, as a non-profit with tight budgets, the stakes are high. Mistakes can be costly, so it’s hugely important to choose the right software.

And as for why ‘it doesn’t have to be’ – with the right approach; the right people on board; and realistic expectations in place up front, the whole process is achievable with minimal disruption.

Once you have a solid impact case in place and the support of your team, your attention can turn to the product(s).

If you’ve not yet built your impact case, or want to check you have everything covered, check out our blog, Building an impact case for your non-profit’s new financial management solution.

Software selection six step plan

At CPiO, we recommend a 6-step plan when evaluating software. In brief these steps are:

  1. Clarify motivation and opportunities
  2. Refine objectives
  3. Set the budget and consider total cost of ownership
  4. Understand your requirements
  5. Assess software solutions
  6. Re-evaluate and improve data management

Take a look at the 6 step plan in full – download our eBook 7 Practical Steps to Non-Profit Finance Transformation. These straightforward steps will add focus to your decision-making process and help you make the right choice when the time comes to select a replacement system.
